A Pin and its file are two different things
Pinterest stores the Pin — the artwork, the title, the description, the link, the counts — separately from the media file the Pin points at. When the media is removed, the Pin record frequently survives and keeps its “video” flag.
The result is a Pin that cannot play anywhere. Pinterest's own player has nothing to load, which is why a broken Pin looks the same on Pinterest as it does here.
How to recognise it
There are two signs, and either one is enough:
- The Pin does not play on Pinterest itself — not in the feed, and not on the Pin's own page. A video Pin that plays nowhere has no file left.
- The Pin still carries its video badge, because the badge is part of the Pin record rather than proof that a file exists.
What you can still save
The cover image is usually intact, because it is stored as a normal image alongside the Pin rather than inside the video file. That one image can still be saved at whatever sizes Pinterest holds.
Nothing else can be recovered. The video bytes are not on Pinterest's servers any more, so there is nothing for any downloader to fetch — this is a limit of the source, not of a particular tool.
Why the tool tells you instead of just failing
A downloader that only checks whether a URL exists will hand you a broken file or a zero-byte download and leave you guessing. Here the Pin's media is inspected first, so the page can report the actual state: the video is gone, here is the cover instead.
An honest error beats a silent one. If you see this message, retrying will not help — and now you know why.
Frequently asked questions
Can the video be recovered some other way?
Not from Pinterest. The file has been removed from their servers. If the Pin links to an external page that still hosts the video, that page is a separate source.
Is this a bug on this site?
No. Open the same Pin on Pinterest and it will not play there either. The Pin is the broken part.
Can I still download the cover image?
Yes — the cover is a normal image and is offered at every size Pinterest holds, including the largest one.
